After travelling all over the world I was inspired to expand my horizons with interior design. Since I was working in a fulltime and additional part-time job, going back to university or college was out of the question for me; I needed a course with flexibility. I was flicking through a magazine one day and saw an article on The Interior Design Academy and said to myself this is perfect.
I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the course and it’s the best study decision I’ve ever made. The course covered everything I was hoping for and more; from colour schemes, plans and ecofriendly designs. It was easy to follow and there was no pressure.
The tutorials were informative, educational and easy to read. If I had any questions my tutor was on hand by email or I could phone and to talk to the friendly academy staff to discuss any difficulties I needed to work through. This gave me confidence to explore my own style throughout the course.
Since completing the course I have started my own business which fits in perfectly with my family life as I’m able to work the hours I want.
A few of my recent projects include:
A complete renovation of a 1960’s home. The whole house was guttered, a second bathroom added with a complete makeover from ceiling to floors. It was a great experience as it allowed me to work with a blank canvas. The property didn’t come without its challenges and these issues taught me to look outside the box for appealing solutions to make the home look its best.
Another project included a facelift for a holiday home. Its décor screamed 1970 and the salmon exterior with teal accents made it an eyesore to look at from the street; though easy to spot. The budget was tight. I took the strategy of a few coats of paint, lifting carpets to polish the floors boards, extending the alfresco and repaving using second hand pavers. These relatively small changes made a huge difference to the outlook of the house.
Then a few years later I dressed the holiday home for sale. This included recarpeting the living area, lifting the carpet in the formal lounge which revealed more jarrah floor boards that were polished, a lick of varnish on all architrave and some mulch in the garden. Again the budget was tight but I was able to complete the home with some lovely finishes and the home sold in just 4 days.
I’ve also assisted a few home owners in the sale of their home (dressing for sale/ home staging). These types of projects are on a small scale which are generally completed in a couple of days, sometimes as little as 7 hours depending on how much the house needs to be dressed.
These projects would not have been the successes that they were if I had not completed The Professional Interior Design Course with The Interior Design Academy.
