Shortly after having my first child, I realised that my heart just wasn’t in my existing career in software sales. I had always been interested in interior design, and having just embarked on building a new home, I had relished the challenge of choosing all the interior fixtures and fittings. I really enjoyed styling my new home and decided I would love a career in the interior design industry.
Attending college with a small baby was not an option for me at the time, so after researching and reading many positive reviews, I contacted The Interior Design Academy.
I enrolled in The Professional Interior Design Course delivered via correspondence. I liked the convenience of being able to take my time completing the course without assignment deadlines, which fitted around the priorities of my new baby. My tutor was extremely helpful and responsive. I found the tutorial topics interesting and particularly enjoyed the assignments. I learned so much, not only about interior design but how to run my own business and I also gained lots of practical experience with real scenarios, projects and clients.
After successfully completing the course, I gained the skills and confidence I needed to be able to look for work or set up my own business. Initially, I started an interior design blog and then secured a job on a voluntary basis editing and styling for a well-known interiors magazine. Following on from this, I set up my own business initially offering property styling services. I moved abroad and decided to enter back into full-time employment. With my new design skills, I was able to secure work with Chalon, designing and selling beautiful bespoke kitchens to discerning clients. My first client was a major TV celebrity!
I’ve had the pleasure of working for Sir Mark Wilkinson OBE in the UK – designing kitchens and other rooms full of beautiful furniture. Now I’m working back in Australia again, still in the design industry. I am so thankful that I decided to undertake The Professional Interior Design Course with the Interior Design Academy and make the move into an interior design career. No two days are the same and I’m working in a creative industry I love.
